Shelter of the Week:
Muttville Senior Dog Rescue

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue is a pioneer in animal welfare dedicated to giving older dogs a sweet second lease on life. Founded in San Francisco in 2007 by animal advocate Sherri Franklin in her own home, Muttville was created to address a heartbreaking gap in animal shelters: senior dogs. These pups are often deemed "unadoptable" due to age or minor health needs, being overlooked or euthanized despite having so much love left to give. That's why Muttville, and organizations like it, are so important.

Since its inception, Muttville has rescued and rehomed thousands of senior dogs, changing the perception of senior pet adoption nationwide.

What Makes Muttville Special

  • Cage-Free Living: Unlike traditional shelters, Muttville operates open, cage-free facilities where rescue dogs can lounge on cozy beds, socialize comfortably, and feel at home while waiting for their forever families.
  • Comprehensive Care: Every incoming pup receives thorough veterinary attention, dental work, grooming, and tailored medical support to ensure they are healthy, happy, and comfortable.
  • Hospice Program: For senior dogs with terminal conditions or specialized needs, Muttville provides compassionate hospice care and loving homes, ensuring every dog spends their final chapter surrounded by comfort and affection.

A Dog Lover’s Guide to Halloween

Halloween is a magical night filled with glowing jack-o'-lanterns, creative costumes, and endless neighborhood fun. But while we humans look forward to the spooktacular excitement, the sudden influx of masked strangers, doorbell rings, and piles of sweet treats can be downright spooky for our four-legged family members.

Keep the Sweets Out of Reach

The trick-or-treat bowl is the star of the night, but many Halloween treats are hazardous and potentially fatal to dogs.

  • Chocolate: Rich, dark, or baking chocolates are especially dangerous, but all chocolate should be kept well away from Curious Snoots.
  • Xylitol / Birch Sugar: This artificial sweetener is commonly found in sugar-free candies, gums, and baked goods. Even tiny amounts can cause a rapid, dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver failure in dogs.
  • Raisins & Grapes: Often handed out in small boxes as healthier alternatives, these are toxic to a dog's kidneys.
  • Wrappers & Foil: Plastic wrappers and shiny foil can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed.
Pro-Tip: Set up a "dog-safe candy station" near your front door stocked with your dog’s favorite healthy biscuits or chew treats. That way, when kids get their treats, your pup can safely join in on the reward!

Dress to Stress Less

There is nothing quite as cute as a dog in a costume, but your pet’s comfort and safety should always come first.

  • Check the Fit: Make sure the outfit doesn't restrict your dog’s vision, hearing, breathing, or ability to move normally.
  • Avoid Small Parts: Buttons, snaps, dangling strings, or bows can easily be chewed off and swallowed.
  • Do a Practice Run: Let your pup try on their costume a few days before Halloween for short periods. Offer plenty of praise and treats to create positive associations.
  • Know When to Skip It: If your dog shows signs of stress—like freezing, panting, tucked tails, or trying to rub the outfit off—swap the costume for a festive Halloween bandana instead!

Manage the Trick-or-Treat Rush

An opening front door combined with strangers in strange masks can trigger escape attempts or defensive barking.

  • Secure the Exit: Keep your pup in a cozy, secure room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. Play calming background music or turn on the TV to muffle the sound of the doorbell.
  • Microchip & ID Tags: Ensure your dog's collar tags are up to date and their microchip contact information is current, just in case an accidental getaway occurs.
  • Lighting & Decor: Keep glowing candles inside jack-o'-lanterns out of reach of wagging tails and curious paws. Low-hanging light strands or electrical cords should also be safely tucked away.

Evening Walks: Time It Right

If you plan to take your dog for their evening stroll, try to go early before the main crowds hit the streets in costume.

  • Reflective Gear: Put a glowing collar, LED clip-on light, or reflective leash on your dog so drivers and pedestrians can clearly see you both in the dark.
  • Keep Distances: Even friendly dogs can get spooked by loud groups, glowing props, or large inflatable lawn decorations. Give festive yard setups and trick-or-treaters plenty of room.

Wishing you, your family, and your furry companions a happy, safe, and tail-wagging Halloween!
