Shelter of the Week:
Muttville Senior Dog Rescue

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue is a pioneer in animal welfare dedicated to giving older dogs a sweet second lease on life. Founded in San Francisco in 2007 by animal advocate Sherri Franklin in her own home, Muttville was created to address a heartbreaking gap in animal shelters: senior dogs. These pups are often deemed "unadoptable" due to age or minor health needs, being overlooked or euthanized despite having so much love left to give. That's why Muttville, and organizations like it, are so important.

Since its inception, Muttville has rescued and rehomed thousands of senior dogs, changing the perception of senior pet adoption nationwide.

What Makes Muttville Special

  • Cage-Free Living: Unlike traditional shelters, Muttville operates open, cage-free facilities where rescue dogs can lounge on cozy beds, socialize comfortably, and feel at home while waiting for their forever families.
  • Comprehensive Care: Every incoming pup receives thorough veterinary attention, dental work, grooming, and tailored medical support to ensure they are healthy, happy, and comfortable.
  • Hospice Program: For senior dogs with terminal conditions or specialized needs, Muttville provides compassionate hospice care and loving homes, ensuring every dog spends their final chapter surrounded by comfort and affection.

Why Your Dog Faces North to Go to the Bathroom

If you have ever taken your four-legged companion out for their daily stroll, you are likely familiar with the classic bathroom ritual: the slow sniffing, the dramatic pacing, the endless circling, and, finally, the grand pause.

To the untrained eye, it looks like simple canine fussiness. But if you glance down at your phone’s compass app while your pup does their thing, you might notice something astonishing. More often than not, your furry friend is lining up directly along Earth’s North-South axis.

The Internal Compass: Magnetoreception

It turns out your dog has a built-in GPS, or rather, an internal compass.

Scientists call this phenomenon magnetoreception: the ability to detect Earth’s magnetic fields. While we knew migratory birds, sea turtles, and honeybees relied on magnetic lines to navigate across vast distances, researchers eventually turned their attention to domestic pets.

In a groundbreaking study published in Frontiers in Zoology, researchers observed 70 dogs of 37 different breeds over a two-year period, tracking thousands of bathroom breaks. The result? When Earth’s magnetic field is calm and stable, dogs show a clear preference for aligning their bodies along the North-South axis while defecating, actively avoiding East-West alignments.

Why Do They Do It During Bathroom Breaks?

Why align during this specific moment?

Going to the bathroom is one of the few times a dog stands completely still in an open area for several seconds. To tune into something as subtle as a planetary magnetic field, a dog needs a quiet moment free of distraction.

While scientists are still exploring why alignment feels right to dogs, a few popular theories help explain the behavior:

  • Internal Comfort & Comfort Zone: Aligning with the magnetic field may create a subconscious sense of harmony or physical comfort—much like finding the "right" pillow.
  • Spatial Orientation & Territory: Aligning with magnetic lines helps dogs map their surroundings. Leaving scent marks relative to an internal coordinate system may help them recall where they’ve marked their territory.
  • Safety & Vulnerability: In the wild, taking a bathroom break puts an animal in a vulnerable position. Feeling oriented to their surroundings helps them stay alert to potential danger.

The Catch: Solar Storms & Daily Distractions

Before you start tossing out your hiking compass in favor of your retriever, keep in mind that your dog’s internal compass isn't foolproof.

  • Magnetic Fluctuations: During solar storms or natural disruptions in Earth's magnetic field, dogs lose their preference for North-South alignment and pick directions entirely at random.
  • Everyday Determinants: Strong winds, bright sunlight, unfamiliar noises, or an intriguing scent nearby often override their magnetic impulse.

The Takeaway

The next time your dog takes a few extra spins in the grass before settling down, try not to rush them. They aren't just being picky; they are tuning into the invisible forces of the planet and calibrating their internal compass. Or they're just looking for the right spot!
