Shelter of the Week:
Muttville Senior Dog Rescue

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue is a pioneer in animal welfare dedicated to giving older dogs a sweet second lease on life. Founded in San Francisco in 2007 by animal advocate Sherri Franklin in her own home, Muttville was created to address a heartbreaking gap in animal shelters: senior dogs. These pups are often deemed "unadoptable" due to age or minor health needs, being overlooked or euthanized despite having so much love left to give. That's why Muttville, and organizations like it, are so important.

Since its inception, Muttville has rescued and rehomed thousands of senior dogs, changing the perception of senior pet adoption nationwide.

What Makes Muttville Special

  • Cage-Free Living: Unlike traditional shelters, Muttville operates open, cage-free facilities where rescue dogs can lounge on cozy beds, socialize comfortably, and feel at home while waiting for their forever families.
  • Comprehensive Care: Every incoming pup receives thorough veterinary attention, dental work, grooming, and tailored medical support to ensure they are healthy, happy, and comfortable.
  • Hospice Program: For senior dogs with terminal conditions or specialized needs, Muttville provides compassionate hospice care and loving homes, ensuring every dog spends their final chapter surrounded by comfort and affection.

Fix Tired Eyes with Particle Face Cream

Why is my pup looking everywhere before going potty?

The weather is pleasant, the leash is loose, and you have plenty of places to be. Yet, there you stand on the sidewalk, motionless, watching your dog sniff the same clump of grass for three solid minutes. They walk two steps forward, turn three circles, inspect a dandelion like a seasoned detective, and… move on to the next patch without doing a thing.

If you’ve ever found yourself asking, "Why is this taking so long?"—you are definitely not alone. Every dog owner has experienced the mysterious delays of the "potty walk."

Reading the "Neighborhood Newspaper"

For dogs, a walk isn’t just exercise; it’s an intellectual journey powered by their superpower: their nose. While humans process the world primarily through sight, dogs experience it through scent. A single fire hydrant or blade of grass carries a mountain of information left behind by every dog that passed by earlier.

When your dog spends ages sniffing a single spot, they are reading the local news:

  • Who was here?
  • How long ago were they here?
  • What did they eat?
  • How are they feeling?

Before your dog leaves their own mark, they want to thoroughly analyze the neighborhood updates and decide precisely how and where to craft their "reply."

Finding the Perfect "Scent Target"

Marking territory or leaving a deposit isn’t just a biological relief for a dog—it's communication. Placing a scent in a specific spot sends a message about their presence to other dogs in the area.

Because this message is public, dogs are remarkably picky about placement. They want to make sure their scent lands on a spot where it will be easily detected (or where it strategically covers up another dog's message). Finding the ideal, high-value target takes time, focus, and a whole lot of trial sniffs.

The Science of the "Spin" (Magnetic Alignment)

Have you ever wondered why your dog executes three perfect circles before finally squatting? It looks like a quirky little dance, but scientists actually studied this behavior and discovered something fascinating: dogs are sensitive to Earth’s magnetic field.

A study published in Frontiers in Zoology found that under calm magnetic field conditions, dogs prefer to align their bodies along a North-South axis when defecating. That rhythmic spinning motion is believed to be your dog calibrating their internal compass with the Earth's magnetic lines to find the most comfortable orientation!

Procrastination for the Love of the Walk

If your dog loves being outside, exploring, and spending quality time with you, they might intentionally hold off on going to the bathroom simply because they know it extends the adventure. By delaying their business, they get to enjoy a few more minutes of fresh air, exciting smells, and bonding with their favorite human.

Feeling Safe and Comfortably Relaxed

Eliminating leaves a dog vulnerable for a few moments, which means they need to feel relaxed and secure before they can settle down.

If there are sudden noises, strange smells, unfamiliar dogs nearby, or bustling traffic, your dog's brain might stay on high alert. It takes time for them to scan the environment, confirm that everything is safe, and give their body permission to relax enough to do what needs to be done.

How to Help (And Enjoy the Ride)

If you’d like to gently encourage a slightly quicker routine, or simply want to make the experience better for both of you, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Separate "Potty Time" from "Explore Time": If you're in a rush, take your dog straight to a designated spot first. Give them a few quiet minutes, use a consistent verbal cue (like "Go potty"), and offer a high-value treat immediately after they finish.
  • Reward with Extra Walking Time: Don't turn around to head inside the exact second they finish. Give them 5 extra minutes of walking or sniffing as a reward for going quickly, breaking the association that going potty ends the fun.
  • Embrace the Pace: When you aren't pressed for time, try to treat the walk as a mindful break for yourself, too. Watching your dog take deep joy in the simplest smells can be a wonderful reminder to slow down and enjoy the present moment.

The Big Picture

The next time you’re standing on the sidewalk waiting patiently while your dog sniffs, spins, and ponders life, take a deep breath and smile. They aren't trying to stall—they're just catching up on the local news, aligning with the planet, and savoring every second of the journey with you!
