Why Does My Dog Stand on Me?
If you’ve ever been lounging on the couch only for your seventy-pound Golden Retriever or tiny five-pound Chihuahua to climb right up and stand on your lap, ribs, or chest, you’re not alone. It’s a classic dog move that leaves many pet parents asking: Of all the soft spots in the house, why am I the chosen footstool?
A Warm, Paw-sitive Hug
First and foremost, standing on you is often a huge sign of love. Dogs don't have hands to throw around your shoulders, so they use their whole bodies to get close. Leaning, pressing, and standing on you releases oxytocin (AKA the "love hormone") in both you and your pup. To them, standing on you is the ultimate weighted blanket hug.
"Look at Me!"
Dogs are masters of reading human behavior. They know that standing on your lap, legs, or chest is virtually impossible to ignore. Whether they want a belly rub, a treat, or just a little reassuring eye contact, standing on you is an foolproof way to put themselves front and center in your world.
Claiming Their Favorite Human
Dogs experience the world through smell. They have scent glands in their paw pads, and when they step, press, or stand on you, they are depositing subtle pheromones. It’s their gentle way of marking you as family or a proud declaration that says, "This is my human, and we belong together."
Seeking a VIP Viewpoint
Sometimes, the floor just doesn't offer a good enough vantage point. By standing on you, your dog gains a higher perch to keep an eye on the household, peek out the window, or watch what you're up to. Plus, being up higher makes them feel a bit more secure and involved in whatever action is happening around them.
Seeking Comfort or Reassurance
If your dog suddenly climbs up and stands on you during a thunderstorm, fireworks, or a noisy house visit, they are looking for a haven. Standing on their trusted human grounds them and helps them feel protected when the environment feels a little too unpredictable.
How to Respond
If you love the extra cuddle time, enjoy the moment! But if your dog's paws are digging in a little too hard, you can gently guide them off with a positive command like "Off" or "Down," immediately redirecting them to sit or lie down comfortably beside you with a sweet treat or pat.
Next time your furry best friend uses you as a human standing desk, take it as the highest compliment: you are their ultimate safe space.
