Phoenix, a 9-year-old male Rottweiler mix, was rescued from the Castaic Shelter near Los Angeles. This boy is ready for his loving home! Housetrained, neutered, and microchipped, he recently had a dental, too! All he needs is you! Phoenix is incredibly affectionate - he loves nothing more than cuddling in your lap and laying his head on your shoulder! He'll look you right in the eyes with all the love he can conjure up; he loves people! And he loves his doggy "girlfriends" Darla the doberman and Darlene the German Shepherd! He thrives on affection - He loves both women and men equally! His daily walker says, "Phoenix is the most affectionate dog I have ever known in all my years of volunteering!" Why Our Dogs Tuck Their Paws When They Sleep
If you’re a dog parent, you’ve undoubtedly witnessed the phenomenon: your pup is drifting off to dreamland, and suddenly, their front paws tuck tightly inward, looking like a pair of adorable, furry little hooks. Pet lovers affectionately call it the "T-Rex paw" or "bunny paws."
The Anatomy of Total Relaxation
When you see those wrists bent tightly inward, your first instinct might be to wonder, doesn't that hurt? Surprisingly, it’s the exact opposite.
When dogs are fully relaxed, their tendons naturally go slack. Just like human fingers curl slightly inward when we sleep, a dog’s carpus (their wrist joint) easily folds when no weight is being placed on it. If your dog is snoozing with curled paws, it is a definitive sign that they feel entirely safe and comfortable in their environment. Their muscles have completely "let go."
Preserving Body Heat
Before dogs had plush orthopedic memory-foam beds and heated living rooms, they had to brave the elements. Curling their paws tightly under their chest or stomach is a deeply ingrained survival instinct designed to conserve heat.
A dog's paw pads are one of the few places they can lose heat quickly. Tucking those pads against their warm belly helps trap their core body temperature, keeping them perfectly insulated while they rest.
Protecting Their Most Sensitive Tools
In the wild, an injured paw meant an inability to hunt or run from danger. The undersides of your dog's paws are packed with nerve endings and blood vessels. By curling their wrists inward, dogs instinctively create a protective barrier around their sensitive pads, shielding them from potential vulnerability while their guard is down during sleep.
The Ultimate Compliment: If your dog regularly falls asleep next to you with their paws curled in, take it as a five-star review of your home. It means they don't feel the need to keep their feet flat on the ground for a quick escape. They trust you completely.
So, the next time you see your pup sporting those sweet, tucked-in paws, know that you are looking at a dog who is deeply relaxed, beautifully adapted, and completely at peace.
