A Final, Loving Chapter for Lazare: The Tiny French Contender for 'World's Oldest Dog' Passes Away at 30
They say that love doesn't count the years, but in the case of a tiny Papillon dwarf spaniel named Lazare, the years were truly something to marvel at.
Lazare, a gentle soul with the classic stand-up "butterfly" ears of his breed, passed away peacefully in the southeastern French town of Villy-le-Pelloux. He was an astounding 30 years and five months old. To put that into perspective, Lazare was born on December 4, 1995—making him a contemporary of the early days of the internet, a witness to three different decades, and quite possibly the oldest living dog on the planet.

A Life of Devotion and a Quiet Rescue
For the vast majority of his three decades, Lazare lived a quiet life of deep loyalty. He spent his years by the side of his original owner. Tragically, according to a report by France 24, he was eventually discovered faithfully waiting right next to her body after she passed away.
With no family to take him, the senior pup found himself at a local animal charity shelter, facing an uncertain future at an age few dogs ever dream of reaching.
That was until Ophelie Boudol walked in.
Boudol, a 29-year-old single mother, had actually gone to the shelter to look for a pet for her own mother. Instead, she locked eyes with a dog who was older than she was. Speaking to AFP via France 24, Boudol recalled the moment her heart melted:
"I spent half an hour sitting next to him, then I said, 'Listen, if nobody wants to take him, I don't mind -- as long as he gets on with the cats.'"
'Our Little Grandpa Baby'
Lazare moved in with Boudol, her nine-year-old son, and their two cats. At 30 years old, his needs were substantial. He was entirely blind and deaf, wore nappies, and spent almost the entire day sleeping. Yet, despite the heavy toll of his years, his spirit remained completely intact.
Boudol warmly affectionately referred to him as "our little grandpa baby" and noted that he possessed a "delightfully spirited" and "endearing personality."
His extraordinary age didn't go unnoticed by the shelter workers either. Anne-Sophie Moyon, a worker at the animal charity, explained that after verifying Lazare’s birth date in two separate official registries, they realized they were looking at a living miracle. As a fun, lighthearted tribute to his incredible resilience, the team filled out the paperwork to register him with Guinness World Records.
While the official record is still unverified, Lazare's lifespan easily eclipses the typical 13-to-15-year life expectancy for Papillons.
Slipped Away in Love
Though his final chapter with his new family lasted only a few weeks, it was a period filled with immense warmth, dignity, and comfort. Lazare didn't have to spend his final days in a shelter cage; he spent them being cradled by a family that adored him.
On a quiet Thursday evening, the remarkable little spaniel decided it was time to rest.
"He started slipping away in my arms last night," Boudol shared gently with the press. "He was off to reunite with his first carer."
Lazare’s journey reminds us that no matter how old, frail, or tired a rescue animal might be, they always have a mountain of love left to give—and they always deserve a soft place to land. Rest easy, little one.
