The Truth Behind Those Loud Stomach Gurgles

Sometimes, it sounds like a tiny thunderstorm or a squeaky toy trapped underwater. You look down, and your dog looks back at you, completely unbothered, while their stomach makes sounds loud enough to compete with the television.

While these loud tummy rumbles—known scientifically as borborygmi—can sound alarming to a pet parent, they are usually completely normal.

What Causes That Tummy Sound?

Just like humans, dogs experience stomach noises when gas and liquid move through their gastrointestinal tract. As the muscles in the stomach and intestines contract to push food along—a process called peristalsis—air gets squeezed, producing those bizarre squeaks, pops, and growls.

Here are the most common reasons your pup's stomach might be putting on a concert:

• An Empty Stomach: If it has been several hours since your dog’s last meal, their digestive tract is mostly full of gas and fluid. Without solid food to muffle the movement, peristalsis sounds much louder.
• Swallowing Too Much Air: Dogs that gulp down their food or water at lightning speed swallow a lot of excess air. That trapped air eventually has to move through the digestive system, creating noisy gas pockets.
• Dietary Misadventures: Did your dog sneak a counter-swipe treat or vacuum up something mysterious on their morning walk? Digesting new, unusual, or fatty foods can cause extra gas production and heightened digestive activity.
• Normal Digestion at Work: Sometimes, a noisy tummy simply means the digestive system is working hard to break down a recent meal.

When to Keep an Eye Out

Most of the time, stomach noises are harmless. However, if the rumbles are accompanied by lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, signs of pain, or a swollen, hard abdomen, skip the wait and contact your veterinarian immediately.

For everyday gurgles, offering a small snack, using a slow-feeder bowl, or simply waiting for digestion to take its course is all it takes to bring back the quiet.
