12 Dumbest Things Smart Americans Waste Money On

You’re smart about saving money, like shopping clearance racks, limiting eating out, and choosing affordable streaming services. However, there are still some cost-cutting tips you might not know yet. Once you discover these, you could quickly find extra cash in your pocket.

Why Some of Our Favorite Breeds Stay for the Shortest Time

Anyone who has ever shared their life with a dog knows that our only real complaint about them is that they simply do not live long enough. They weave themselves into our routines, guard our secrets, and offer a level of unconditional love that is hard to find anywhere else.

But if you have ever lost a canine companion, you know the grief is real. And for those who love the world’s largest, most magnificent breeds, that goodbye often comes much sooner than we'd like.

While a tiny Chihuahua might easily coast past its 15th birthday, many giant breeds have a lifespan that cuts out at nearly half that time. It is a bittersweet reality of the dog world: the bigger the dog, the less time we generally get to spend with them.

Why Do Big Dogs Age So Fast?

It seems completely backward. In the rest of the animal kingdom, bigger usually means longer-lived (think elephants and whales). But inside the canine species, massive size works against them.

Large dogs grow from tiny puppies into hundred-pound giants at a breakneck, biologically stressful pace. This rapid growth is linked to a higher concentration of a growth hormone called IGF-1. Unfortunately, this accelerated early growth acts like a fast-forward button on their internal clocks, causing their cells to age much more quickly and making them more susceptible to age-related diseases early in life.

The Breeds with the Shortest Lifespans

If you are considering bringing one of these beautiful souls into your family, it helps to go in with your eyes and heart wide open. Here are the breeds that statistically have the shortest life expectancies.

BreedAverage LifespanWhat Makes Them Special
Dogue de Bordeaux5 to 8 yearsFamous for their massive heads and souls to match, these French mastiffs are intensely loyal, deeply affectionate protectors.
Great Dane6 to 8 yearsThe "Apollo of dogs." They are towering lapdogs who want nothing more than to lean against your legs and steal your couch.
Bernese Mountain Dog6 to 8 yearsEasygoing, tri-colored beauties from the Swiss Alps known for their striking coats and incredibly gentle nature with children.
Irish Wolfhound6 to 8 yearsSerene, rough-coated giants. They are commanding in stature but famously introverted, calm, and deeply sensitive.
Mastiff6 to 10 yearsHeavyweight champions of the dog world who are surprisingly low-energy and prefer napping to almost any other activity.

Making Every Single Moment Count

Knowing a dog’s time is limited shouldn't scare us away from loving them. In fact, many people who love giant breeds say it makes their relationship even more profound. You don't take a single year for granted.

If you share your home with a shorter-lived breed, there are proactive ways to support their longevity and keep them comfortable:

  • Protect their joints early: Because they carry so much weight, giant breeds are prone to arthritis. High-quality orthopedic beds and joint supplements (like glucosamine and chondroitin) are essential.
  • Watch out for "Bloat": Deep-chested breeds are susceptible to Gastric Dilation-Volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening twisting of the stomach. Prevent heavy exercise for an hour after meals and consider using slow-feeder bowls.
  • Keep them lean: Extra weight accelerates joint damage and strains the heart. Keeping your big dog at a healthy, lean weight can add months—or even years—of quality time to their life.

Ultimately, dogs don't measure the quality of their lives by the number of birthdays they celebrate. They measure it by the number of belly rubs, the warmth of their sleeping spots, and the love they share with you. A short life filled with love is still a perfect life to a dog.
