Social media users expressed relief that Jaxson was saved, with many emphasizing that healthy animals should never face euthanasia. One user noted that Jaxson "100 percent deserves to be spoiled," while others predicted the owner would be rewarded with a lifetime of "love and loyalty" from the "cutie pie" rescue.

A Shifting Tide in Shelter Euthanasia

Jaxson’s story serves as a personal example of a significant national trend. According to data from the Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS), the United States has seen a dramatic 60 percent decrease in shelter euthanasia over the last eight years.

• 2016: More than 1 million dogs and cats were euthanized.
• 2024: That number has dropped to approximately 425,000.

Last year, U.S. shelters took in nearly 5 million animals, and nearly 4 million of those were successfully placed in foster or forever homes.

The Goal of a "No-Kill" Nation

BFAS CEO Julie Castle reports that a "no-kill" status—defined as a 90 percent save rate—is becoming the new standard in animal welfare. Currently, nearly two out of three shelters in the U.S. have achieved this benchmark. The remaining 10 percent margin is reserved for animals with severe medical or behavioral issues that irredeemably impact their quality of life.
