Thermal Cameras and Community Spirit Save Dog Stranded in Remote New Zealand Wilderness

After hiker Jessica Johnston survived a 180-foot fall down a waterfall in New Zealand’s Arahura Valley, her border collie, Molly, remained missing in the rugged terrain for a week. The story gained national attention, prompting a community-funded rescue mission led by helicopter pilot Matt Newton.

Using over $6,300 in crowdfunded donations, Newton’s team deployed a helicopter equipped with thermal imaging technology to locate the dog. On April 1, 2026, Molly was spotted near the accident site—remarkably uninjured and likely having survived by hunting. The high-tech search ended in a tearful reunion, providing a happy ending for Johnston as she continues her recovery from the fall.
