Scrim the Escape Artist: How One Runaway Dog Captured the Heart — and Streets — of New Orleans
Meet Scrim, the wiry terrier-mutt who has become one of New Orleans’ most unlikely celebrities — not for tricks or showmanship, but for outwitting capture again and again.
Originally rescued from a shelter in Terrebonne Parish, Scrim was brought into care by Michelle Cheramie of Zeus’ Rescues in late 2023. But almost immediately, the real adventure began. In April 2024, on his first night in a foster home, Scrim slipped free. He remained on the run for months, during which he endured blistering heat, storms, and even gunshot wounds.

The New Orleans City Council honors Scrim at a ceremony in City Hall. The dog is on the run again after being captured in October.

When he was finally caught in October 2024, he was treated for abrasions, embedded projectiles, and a missing chunk of ear — yet only weeks later he escaped again. In November, he chewed through a second-floor window screen, launched himself about 13 feet to the ground, scrambled out under a fence, and vanished yet again.
Over the ensuing months, volunteers, animal groups, and neighborhood watch brigades combed the city. Scrim’s GPS collar battery died, sightings were scattered, and the chase covered an estimated 57 square miles. Ultimately, in February 2025, it was the animal-rescue group Trap Dat Cat that trapped Scrim humanely and returned him to safety.
Today, Scrim is being closely watched. He’s outfitted with better tracking, and his caretakers promise a secure environment — no more daring leaps. But the city still marvels: this little dog, once on the brink of euthanasia, now embodies resilience, mystery and defiance. In the eyes of New Orleans, Scrim is more than a rescue — he’s a legend.
Good boy, Scrim!
