Opening Presents Safely Around Pups

There is nothing quite like the chaos of a holiday morning: the crinkle of wrapping paper, the scent of fresh coffee, and the infectious excitement of the family gathered around the tree. For our dogs, this high-energy environment is a sensory playground. Between the flying ribbons and the mysterious boxes, "present time" can quickly turn from a sweet photo-op into a bit of a safety scramble.

With a little bit of planning, you can make sure the gift exchange is safe, stress-free, and full of tail wags.

The "Wrapping" Hazards

The biggest risks during the gift exchange are often the things we throw away.

  • Ribbons and String: These are the primary culprits. If swallowed, ribbons and "curly" bows can cause "linear foreign body" issues in the gut, which is a fancy way of saying a very expensive trip to the vet. Keep a designated trash bag nearby to toss ribbons in immediately.

  • The Tape Trap: Sticky tape can easily get matted into fur or stuck to a curious nose. While it’s mostly just a nuisance, it can cause a pup to panic.

  • Battery Safety: Many toys and gadgets come with those tiny "button" batteries or small AA batteries. If these are dropped in the excitement, they are incredibly dangerous if swallowed. Always unbox electronics on a table rather than the floor.

Managing the Excitement

Some dogs get "over-aroused" by the ripping of paper and the high-pitched cheers of the family.

  • The "Place" Command: If your dog knows "place" or "stay," use it! Having them watch the festivities from the comfort of their bed (with a stuffed chew toy of their own) keeps them out of the direct line of fire.

  • The "Trade Up" Strategy: If your dog manages to snag a gift that isn't theirs, don’t chase them—that just makes it a fun game of keep-away! Instead, keep a handful of high-value treats nearby to "trade" them for the item.

Gift Selection: Dog-Proofing the Pile

Dogs have incredible noses. If there is a box of chocolates or a fancy summer sausage under the tree, they will find it long before the sun comes up.

  • No Food Under the Tree: Even if it’s wrapped in multiple layers, avoid leaving edible gifts (for humans or pets) on the floor. Chocolate, raisins, and xylitol are all holiday staples that are toxic to dogs.

  • Watch the Small Parts: Kids’ toys often have tiny accessories that look remarkably like kibble or small treats. Supervise children as they open their gifts to ensure no "Lego snacks" end up on the carpet.

Create a "Puppy Present" Routine

To keep your dog from feeling left out (and to distract them from your gifts), give them their own present to open!

  1. Wrap it lightly: Use a single layer of plain brown paper (no tape or ribbon).

  2. Make it smelly: Hide a smelly treat inside so they know exactly which box is theirs.

  3. The "Big Reveal": Save their gift for the middle of the session. It gives them a job to do while everyone else is opening their own.

A Note on New Toys: Once the paper is cleared, keep an eye on your dog’s new toys. Many plush dog toys contain "squeakers" that can be swallowed in seconds if your dog is a "power chewer" who likes to "dissect" their gifts.

By keeping the floor clear of ribbons and the chocolate on the counter, you can enjoy the magic of the morning knowing your furry friend is right there in the middle of the joy—exactly where they belong.
