The Sweetest Tradition: Celebrating Christmas with Cookies

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s one scent that instantly signals the arrival of the holiday season: freshly baked Christmas cookies. More than just a treat, these sweet morsels are tiny, edible packages of tradition, memory, and love.

The act of baking Christmas cookies is often a cherished ritual—a chance to gather family and friends, dust off Grandma’s favorite recipes, and spend an afternoon dusted in flour and sprinkled with holiday magic.

A Worldwide Delight

Christmas cookies come in a spectacular array of shapes, sizes, and flavors, reflecting a rich tapestry of global traditions:

  • Gingerbread Men and Houses: A beloved classic, these spicy, molasses-sweet treats are perfect for decorating and storytelling.

  • Spritz: Originating in Scandinavia, these buttery, pressed cookies are often formed into festive wreaths and stars.

  • Sugar Cookies: The ultimate canvas for creativity! Rolled, cut into every imaginable holiday shape (trees, bells, snowmen), and then lavishly decorated with icing and sprinkles.

  • Pizzelles: A crisp, delicate Italian waffle cookie, often flavored with anise or vanilla, and pressed with intricate patterns.

The Heart of the Holiday

Whether you’re leaving out a plate for Santa, exchanging tins with neighbors, or simply savoring one with a mug of hot cocoa, Christmas cookies are integral to the holiday spirit. They represent the warmth of home, the joy of giving, and the simple pleasure of sharing something sweet during the most wonderful time of the year.

Don't Forget the Furry Family!

While the human family enjoys their sugary delights, our canine companions deserve their own festive treat. These simple, wholesome Dog-Friendly Peanut Butter & Oat Biscuits are perfect for sharing the holiday joy with your best friend! You can even give some to your favorite pup friends, too, for a Yuletide snack!

Recipe: Simple Dog-Friendly Christmas Biscuits

These biscuits are easy to make, great for cutting into festive shapes, and contain no added sugar, salt, or artificial ingredients. Always ensure all ingredients are safe for your specific dog, and check with your vet if you have any concerns.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (or substitute with an alternative flour if your dog has sensitivities)

  • 1 cup rolled oats (uncooked)

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened, unsalted peanut butter (ensure it does not contain Xylitol/Birch Sugar, which is toxic to dogs)

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup water (plus more if needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and rolled oats.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, eggs, and 1/2 cup water until well combined.

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix until a stiff dough forms. If the dough seems too dry or crumbly, add water, one tablespoon at a time, until it comes together.

  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about a 1/4 inch thickness.

  6. Use your favorite small Christmas-themed cookie cutters (snowmen, stars, bones, trees) to cut out the biscuits.

  7. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet.

  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the biscuits are firm.

  9. Allow the biscuits to cool completely on a wire rack before treating your dog.

  10. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Happy baking, and may your home be filled with the delicious aroma of holiday cheer—for humans and canines alike!
