How Summer Heat Affects Surfaces and Paw Pads
It’s finally, officially, the season of sunshine, long walks, and… scorching surfaces? In several parts of the country, there will be big heat waves in the next few days. So we thought an explainer on surface temps might be good. For our canine companions, those seemingly innocuous patches of grass, pavement, and asphalt can quickly turn into a painful hazard. As the temperatures rise, so too does the heat radiating from these common surfaces, posing a real threat to our furry friends' delicate paw pads.
Imagine stepping barefoot onto a sizzling sidewalk – that's often what our dogs experience. While their paw pads are tougher than the soles of our feet, they are by no means invincible. On a hot summer day, the ground can become significantly hotter than the air temperature.

The Sizzling Truth:
Grass: While it may seem like a safe haven, even grass can get surprisingly hot, especially if it has been baking in direct sunlight for hours. It acts like a heat sink, absorbing and radiating warmth.
Pavement: Concrete and light-colored sidewalks are notorious for retaining heat. They absorb solar radiation and then slowly release it, turning into a griddle for unsuspecting paws.
Asphalt: The undisputed champion of heat retention, asphalt (think black roads and parking lots) is a serious offender. Its dark color absorbs almost all of the sun's energy, and it can reach dangerously high temperatures, easily causing burns in a matter of minutes.
Why is This So Dangerous for Dog Paws?
Unlike us, dogs don't wear shoes! Their paw pads are directly exposed to these extreme temperatures. The sensitive skin on their paws can blister, crack, and even suffer severe burns, leading to immense pain, infection, and potentially long-term damage.
Keeping Those Paws Paws-itively Safe!
But don't let this deter you from enjoying summer strolls with your best friend! A little awareness and a few simple precautions can make all the difference:
The "Seven-Second Test": Before heading out, place the back of your hand firmly on the surface for seven seconds. If it's too hot for you to hold comfortably, it's definitely too hot for your dog's paws.
Timing is Everything: Walk your dog during the cooler parts of the day – early morning or late evening – when the sun's intensity has waned and surfaces have had a chance to cool down.
Seek Shady Paths: Whenever possible, stick to grassy areas in the shade or choose routes with ample tree cover.
Booties for Protection: Consider investing in dog booties. While some dogs might need a little time to adjust, they offer an excellent barrier against hot surfaces.
Stay Hydrated: Always carry water for both you and your dog, and offer frequent breaks in the shade.
Know the Signs of Distress: Limping, excessive licking or chewing of paws, refusal to walk, or visible blisters are all signs your dog's paws might be burned. If you suspect an injury, consult your veterinarian immediately.
Summer is a time for fun and adventure, and with a little mindful planning, you can ensure your dog's paws stay happy, healthy, and ready for all your shared escapades. So, let's keep those tails wagging and those paws protected, making sure every summer outing is a joyful and safe experience for our beloved four-legged family members!
