A 1,500-Mile Miracle: Texas Dog Missing for Two Years Found Safe in New Jersey
In a story that proves hope has no expiration date—and that microchips really do work—a North Texas family has been reunited with their beloved dog, Koko, two years after she vanished from their backyard.
The journey of Koko, a 6-year-old Schnauzer, remains a mystery that spans half the continent. In May 2024, Koko managed to slip under a fence at her home in Glenn Heights, Texas. Her owners, Gloria Greer and Will Piece, searched tirelessly, but as the months turned into years, the trail went cold.
"We noticed that she didn't come back, scratch at the door or bark," Greer told WFAA. After two years of silence, the family feared the worst—until a phone call came from 1,500 miles away.
The Discovery in Clark
The miracle began in Clark, New Jersey, when local police responded to a report of a stray dog wandering the streets. Having recently invested in a microchip scanner specifically for these situations, the Clark Police Department was able to identify the pup immediately.
"We deal with this an awful lot here," Clark Police Director Patrick Grady told WFAA. "We would come in contact with so many strays, we invested in a chip reader."
When officers called the number on file, Gloria Greer was in total disbelief. "My God, I'm so excited," Greer recalled to WFAA. "I was screaming through the house. I told my husband, 'They found Koko — but she's in New Jersey.'"
"Living Her Best Life" at the Station
Knowing the family would need a few days to arrange travel from Texas to the Tri-State area, the officers at the Clark Police Department decided to go above and beyond. Rather than sending Koko to a local shelter or pound, the department essentially "adopted" her for the weekend.
According to CBS New York, Koko moved into the dispatch room, where she was treated like royalty. Officers took turns bathing, walking, and feeding her, even buying her a bed and a collection of toys.
"As a dog lover amongst many other dog lovers, we were not going to make that puppy wait in a shelter or pound," Director Grady told CBS New York. "Koko was living her best life inside the dispatch room the last three days."
The Joyful Reunion
The long wait finally ended when Greer and Piece arrived in New Jersey to claim their girl. Despite the two-year gap and the incredible distance traveled, the bond hadn't faded. Director Grady noted that "Koko most certainly recognized Mom and Dad" the moment they walked through the doors (WFAA).
While the mystery of how a small Schnauzer traveled from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to suburban New Jersey remains unsolved—Grady joked that "she certainly didn't walk" (WFAA)—the family is just happy to have her home.
This heartwarming reunion serves as a powerful reminder for pet owners everywhere: keep those microchips updated. Because of a small piece of technology and a dedicated police department, a two-year-old heartbreak has finally turned into a happy ending.
