Greta's story is one we see all too often. She came to the San Francisco SPCA with a rough past and a lot of baggage—both medical and behavioral. When she walked through our doors, it was clear that giving her a second chance wouldn't be easy, but we were more than ready for the challenge.

Greta’s journey was long and difficult even before she arrived. Her health and behavioral issues had made it tough for her to find a home. She was selectively reactive toward other dogs, had three benign masses, and was mildly anemic. While these concerns might have deterred others, we knew they were just part of her story, not her whole identity. We immediately addressed her medical needs and created a tailored plan to help her overcome her fear-based reactivity toward other dogs.

Our dedicated staff and volunteers were central to Greta’s transformation. They gave her regular breaks from the shelter so she could decompress on a comfy couch, provided specialized training, and showered her with extra love. This consistent care showed her that she no longer had to feel scared or territorial.

Through this journey, we discovered the amazing dog she truly was. We learned that Greta loved giving and getting kisses, was incredibly smart, and even enjoyed baths! Her personality began to shine as she started to feel safe and loved.

We knew finding Greta a forever home would be a marathon, not a sprint. After five months of dedicated care, countless staff and volunteer hours, and an endless supply of squeaky toys, the moment finally came. A wonderful family saw the potential in her and chose to give her the loving home she so deserved.

Greta's story is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Giving animals like her the second chance they so desperately need is at the heart of the SF SPCA's mission. Every dog, regardless of their past, deserves a future filled with love, security, and a family to call their own. By opening our hearts and homes, we can help these incredible animals write their happy endings.
