A Gentle Giant’s Bravery: How Otti the Great Dane Overcame His Own Fears to Save His Owner

In a heartwarming display of loyalty that has captured the hearts of millions, a Great Dane service dog named Otti proved that love truly is stronger than fear.

His owner, Alexa—a Bay Area administrative assistant who lives with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)—recently experienced a terrifying medical episode after leaving a cardiology appointment. Her heart rate skyrocketed while her oxygen levels plummeted, leaving her dangerously close to fainting. As she approached a steep flight of stairs, a fall could have been catastrophic.

That’s when Otti, a 120-pound "gentle giant," sprang into action. Recognizing the immediate danger, he refused to let Alexa take the stairs, physically blocking her path with his massive frame. But what made his heroism truly extraordinary wasn't just his training—it was his sacrifice.

Otti has a deep-seated, lifelong fear of elevators. Yet, sensing it was the only safe way to get Alexa to the ground floor, he chose to ignore his own anxiety. He calmly guided her away from the stairs and stepped into the elevator, standing by her side to ensure she reached safety. Once they were off the lift, Otti immediately performed deep pressure therapy, using his weight to help stabilize Alexa’s nervous system.

After a video of the encounter went viral on TikTok, Alexa shared that she posted the footage not for fame, but to shine a light on "invisible disabilities." Through Otti’s brave actions, the world got a front-row seat to the incredible bond between a service animal and their handler—reminding us all that sometimes, the greatest heroes have four paws and a very big heart.

@sicksadgirly I am so incredibly proud and thankful! He faced his worst fear to help me today. I don’t even know how he knew that was the only way I could safely get out of the building. He continually amazes me😭🙏 EDIT: a lot of people are saying my heart rate is not high. I have POTS. This condition is based on how much the heart rate increases between sitting and standing in a short period of time. My resting heart rate is 50-60 bpm, therefore 131 bpm is high for ME. The definition of POTS is an increase of 30 bpm or more, not the specific number. We are all different. Talk to your doctor if you’re worried about your own heart rate. #servicedog #medicalalertdog #servicedoglife #pots #servicedogsoftiktok ♬ original sound - DeucesJJ
