The Ukrainian Couple Staying Behind to Save Forgotten Pets

When war broke out, millions of people faced the agonizing choice to pack what little they could carry and flee. But as neighborhoods emptied and families escaped to safety, a heartbreaking crisis unfolded in their wake: thousands of domestic animals were left behind in active combat zones with no way to survive.

For Ukrainian veterinarians Drs. Valentina and Leonid, leaving was never an option. Rather than seeking refuge away from the front lines, the couple made a courageous decision to stay behind in a war zone, dedicating their lives to rescuing, treating, and feeding animals abandoned amid the chaos.

Love Amid the Shelling

Through their clinic and shelter operations (known to followers online as Vet Crew), Valentina and Leonid have provided critical emergency medical care to animals suffering from trauma, injuries, and starvation. Their refuge has cared for dogs, cats, and exotic animals alike.

Even when danger struck directly at their doorstep, their commitment remained unwavering. That didn't change even when a rocket struck their animal sanctuary.

For the couple, saving these animals is about preserving compassion in a situation designed to strip it away.

Bringing Families Back Together

In addition to providing daily meals and medical treatment, Valentina and Leonid work to coordinate animal evacuations, helping transport pets to shelters across Europe and working tirelessly to reunite lost pets with the refugee families who had to leave them behind.
