Shelter of the Week:
Miri's Haven Senior Dog Rescue

Miri’s Haven Senior Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of senior dogs. Operating primarily in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and surrounding areas, their mission is to create a kinder world for older dogs by providing them with comprehensive veterinary care, safe and loving foster environments, and placement into permanent, forever families. Guided by the promise that every senior dog matters and is worthy of love, the organization strives to ensure that older, neglected, or medically vulnerable dogs live out their final chapters in comfort, dignity, and deep affection.
What Makes Miri's Haven Special
- Specialized Focus on Complex and High-Need Senior Cases: Unlike organizations that focus primarily on younger or easily adoptable animals, Miri’s Haven routinely welcomes senior dogs with complex, costly, or terminal medical conditions—cases that many shelters or rescues often pass over or cannot accommodate.
- Foster-Centric and Sanctuary Support: Instead of being housed in stressful kennel environments, all rescue dogs live directly in loving foster homes where they are spoiled, closely monitored, and transitioned to good health. For dogs whose age or medical conditions make traditional adoption difficult, the rescue provides a permanent sanctuary program so they are never displaced.
- Entirely Volunteer-Run with a Community-First Philosophy: Operating with zero public funding, the rescue relies completely on a passionate network of volunteers, donors, and foster families. They are deeply committed to public advocacy, educating communities on the joys of older pets, and matching each dog thoughtfully to ensure the best possible fit for both the animal and the adopter.
Meme of the day: We are number 9!

Meet Comando: The Pint-Sized Chihuahua Who Traded a Quiet Life for the Mexican National Guard
When we think of elite military and security working dogs, our minds naturally picture towering German Shepherds, muscular Belgian Malinois, or sturdy Labrador Retrievers. But the Mexican National Guard’s newest recruit is rewriting the rulebook on law enforcement aesthetics. Standing just 8 inches tall, weighing in at roughly 15 pounds, and packing a whole lot of attitude.
Enter Comando, a 13-month-old Chihuahua who has officially become the tiniest, and arguably most spirited, member of Mexico’s federal security force.
Comando’s journey to the badge wasn't a traditional one. He initially lived a quiet life with an elderly couple. When his previous owners realized they no longer had the physical strength to keep up with a lively young pup, they lovingly surrendered him to a rescue center.
Fate intervened six months later when the National Guard took him in. Far from being sidelined as a mere mascot, Comando was welcomed into the force’s specialized canine unit, which boasts roughly 350 larger dogs, with a real mission in mind.
Big Dreams, Tiny Paws
Don't let the pint-sized frame fool you. Comando is currently undergoing training for search-and-rescue operations, learning the ropes alongside canine colleagues three times his size. Footage from training bases in Mexico City has captured the resilient pup scampering up stairs, darting over obstacle courses, and holding his own right next to heavy-duty working dogs like Roko. Complete with custom-fitted miniature tactical gear, he tackles every challenge with fearless enthusiasm.
Lieutenant Debora Hernandez notes that Comando is actively shattering the stereotype that only large breeds are cut out for national service. While heavy-duty breeds handle rugged tracking and structural clearance, Comando’s compact stature opens up unique possibilities for navigating tight spaces and disaster zones where bigger dogs simply cannot fit.
Winning Hearts Across the Globe
Beyond the obstacle courses and tactical drills, Comando’s most vital assignment might just be public diplomacy. He frequently makes appearances at civic ceremonies, local schools, and community outreach programs. Whether he is greeting schoolchildren or posing for photos that quickly turn into viral memes online, the tiny soldier has an uncanny knack for bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public.
For a rescue dog who once faced an uncertain future, Comando’s transformation into a national symbol of courage is nothing short of cinematic. He stands as a reminder that heroism isn't measured in pounds or inches; it’s measured by heart, tenacity, and a willingness to step up when called.
