A Very Good Boy: Fillmore the Hero Pointer

In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Tustin, Orange County, a German Shorthaired Pointer named Fillmore proved that a dog’s intuition is sometimes the best alarm system money can’t buy.

Around 4:30 a.m., while his family was fast asleep, Fillmore began barking with an urgency his owners, Tom Dalis and his family, hadn't heard before. Because the fire started in the garage on the opposite side of the house, the internal smoke detectors remained silent. It was Fillmore’s "hunting nature" and keen senses that picked up the danger long before the technology did.

The Midnight Alert

  • The Warning: Fillmore refused to stop barking despite his owners' initial attempts to quiet him.
  • The Discovery: Following Fillmore’s lead, the family looked out the window and discovered their garage was fully engulfed in flames.
  • The Reaction: The family used garden hoses to slow the spread, while the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) arrived swiftly to contain the blaze.

Saving What Matters Most

While the fire unfortunately destroyed the garage and three of the family's vehicles, the outcome could have been much worse. The OCFA credited Fillmore’s early warning with saving the actual living structure of the home.

Tom Dalis, who suffered only minor burns while fighting the flames, expressed his immense gratitude for their protective pooch. As Dalis put it, cars and "things" can be replaced, but his wife and 90-year-old mother-in-law are safe because Fillmore refused to stay quiet.

A Hero’s Reward

Once the flames were out and the danger had passed, Fillmore received plenty of "well-deserved attention" from the firefighters on the scene. Back at home, his family has made sure he’s been properly compensated for his bravery with extra snuggles and a mountain of treats.

Investigation suggests the fire was likely electrical, but for this Tustin family, the only thing that matters is that their four-legged hero was on the hunt that night.
