The Final Chapter Closes as Every Last Ridglan Farm Beagle is Set Free
For the first time in more than sixty years, the cages inside the Ridglan Farms breeding facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, will soon be empty.
In a historic victory for animal welfare, the controversial facility—long a major supplier of beagles for laboratory and medical research—has officially agreed to close its doors forever. Under a groundbreaking new agreement spearheaded by Florida-based Big Dog Ranch Rescue, the remaining 475 beagles inside the compound are stepping out of the dark and into the sunshine, bound for rescue groups and loving forever homes.
A Promise Kept: "Not One Dog Left Behind"
The final closure comes on the heels of a massive, multi-phase effort to empty the facility. Back in late April, a monumental initial rescue operation successfully relocated 2,110 of the facility's dogs. But advocates refused to stop there. There were still hundreds of sweet, floppy-eared pups left behind inside the breeding compound, their futures hanging in the balance.
That’s when Big Dog Ranch Rescue stepped in to seal the final deal, ensuring a complete shutdown of operations.
"When we launched this rescue mission, I made you all a promise," Lauree Simmons, founder and CEO of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, announced triumphantly. "We would not stop until every single beagle was out and safe. We would not leave one dog behind. Today, we have honored that promise. No more breeding, no more selling, no more testing — and full closure. Not one dog will remain."
The Roadmap to Freedom
Emptying a facility of this scale requires an incredible logistical village. Rescue teams have already begun moving the dogs out in carefully planned waves to protect their health and well-being:
The First Wave: Mid-June.
Transport vans safely moved the first group of approximately 200 adult beagles away from the property, giving them their very first taste of freedom.
The Second Wave: Late June.
An additional 125 dogs were loaded onto rescue transports, headed toward specialized rehabilitation facilities.
The Final Puppies: By End of August.
The final 150 dogs—mostly young puppies completing a non-painful clinical trial—will be handed over to rescues, marking the definitive, absolute closure of the facility.
What's Next for the Ridglan Beagles?
Because beagles are inherently docile, forgiving, and trusting, they are historically the most common breed chosen for medical testing. Those very same gentle traits mean they make wonderful, affectionate family pets, though their first few weeks in the real world will be a major adjustment.
The rescued dogs are being distributed to various vetted rescue organizations across the country, as well as to Big Dog Ranch Rescue’s dedicated campuses in Florida and Alabama. Before any of them can be adopted, they will receive top-tier veterinary care, including spay and neuter surgeries, essential vaccinations, microchipping, and plenty of love.
For the first time in their lives, these dogs will get to run on green grass, play with toys, and sleep on soft, warm beds. They won't be known by a number anymore—they'll finally be given names.
Want to help or adopt? The cost of medical care, transport, and rehabilitation for nearly 500 dogs is immense. Rescue groups are actively looking for donations, foster families, and loving adopters to help these resilient pups write their happy endings.
