Ushering Your Pup Through New Seasons
As the seasons change, so do the needs of our furry companions. Like humans, dogs experience weather shifts that can affect their comfort, health, and overall well-being. Although we may be celebrating the coming of a new season, our best pup friends might be dealing with things like new itchies or watery eyes (for example).
Whether it’s the crisp chill of winter, the blooming flowers of spring, the heat of summer, or the falling leaves of autumn, here’s how you can help your dog adjust and stay happy year-round.

Adjust Their Diet and Hydration
Seasonal changes can impact your dog’s dietary needs. During colder months, they may require extra calories to stay warm, while in the summer, lighter meals with plenty of water help them stay cool and hydrated. Always ensure fresh water is available, and consider seasonal treats such as frozen fruit in the summer or warm broth in the winter.
Keep Up with Grooming
Your dog’s coat plays a crucial role in temperature regulation. In winter, avoid excessive trimming to help them retain warmth. In summer, regular brushing helps remove excess fur and prevents overheating. Seasonal shedding is common, so a proper grooming routine can help manage loose fur and skin health.
Protect Those Paws
Each season presents different challenges for your dog’s paws. Winter’s icy sidewalks and salted roads can cause cracks and irritation, while summer’s hot pavement can burn sensitive pads. Consider protective measures like dog booties or paw balm to keep their feet safe and comfortable.
Adjust Exercise Routines As Needed
Extreme weather conditions can impact your dog’s activity levels. In winter, ensure they still get enough exercise indoors if it’s too cold outside. In summer, schedule walks during cooler times of the day—early morning or late evening—to avoid overheating.
Watch for New Allergies and Sensitivities
Spring and fall can bring allergens like pollen, mold, and dust, which may cause itching, sneezing, or watery eyes in dogs. Regular baths, wiping paws after outdoor adventures, and checking with your vet about antihistamines can help alleviate discomfort.
Provide Comfort Regardless Of the Season
Make sure your dog’s living environment is comfortable regardless of the season. In winter, provide cozy blankets and a warm bed away from drafts. In summer, ensure your pup has access to shade, fresh water, and possibly a cooling mat to prevent overheating.
Visit the Vet for Seasonal Check-Ups
Different seasons bring different health concerns, from flea and tick infestations in warm months to joint stiffness in colder months. Regular check-ups can help catch any potential issues early and keep your dog in top shape year-round.
Celebrating a New Season Together
Dogs rely on us to help them navigate seasonal shifts. By making small but potentially significant adjustments to their care routine, you can ensure your furry friend stays happy, healthy, and comfortable no matter what the weather brings. And together you can celebrate the warming of spring (and the daylight hours lasting beyond 5 p.m.!)
